Embrace the Heat: The Surprising Benefits of Wearing Wool in the Summer

by Sarabeth Parido

As we sit in a hot Kentucky July—you may not want think about wearing wool—it may bring up ideas of cozy winter sweaters, thick blankets, and all things warm and snug.  However, wool is not just for cold weather. This natural fiber has some surprising benefits that make it an excellent choice for summer wear too. Here's why you should consider adding wool to your summer wardrobe.

1. Natural Temperature Regulation

Wool is a natural insulator. Its fibers have unique properties that help regulate body temperature. In cold weather, wool traps heat close to your body, keeping you warm. In hot weather, wool can help keep you cool by allowing your body to breathe and wicking moisture away from your skin.

2. Moisture Wicking and Breathability

One of wool's standout features is its ability to wick moisture. Wool fibers can absorb up to 30% of their weight in moisture without feeling wet. This means that as you sweat, wool pulls the moisture away from your skin and allows it to evaporate, keeping you dry and comfortable. This breathability also helps prevent the build-up of odors, which is common with synthetic fabrics.

3. Soft and Lightweight Options

Modern wool fabrics are not the heavy, itchy materials you might remember from your childhood. Advances in wool preparation techniques have produced lightweight, soft, and comfortable wool garments perfect for summer. Merino wool, in particular, is renowned for its next to skin softness, making it an ideal choice for warm-weather fabrics.

4. Sustainability

Wool is a natural, renewable resource.  By choosing wool, you're supporting a natural and sustainable fabric that has a lower environmental impact compared to many synthetic materials.  By choosing locally grown, Kentucky produced wool, you’re also helping to support local farms and families.

How to Incorporate Wool into Your Summer Wardrobe

  • Lightweight Tops: Look for merino wool t-shirts, tank tops, and blouses. These pieces can be worn alone or layered, making them versatile options for fluctuating summer temperatures.

  • Breathable Bottoms: Wool shorts, skirts, and lightweight trousers are excellent choices for staying cool and comfortable. Their moisture-wicking properties are particularly beneficial during hot, humid Kentucky days.

  • Socks: Wool socks might sound counterintuitive, but they are incredibly effective at keeping your feet dry and comfortable. They help regulate temperature and reduce the risk of blisters.

  • Accessories: Wool hats and scarves can protect you from the sun while remaining breathable. Opt for lightweight, loosely woven styles for maximum comfort.

Wearing wool in the summer might seem unconventional, but the benefits speak for themselves. From natural temperature regulation and moisture-wicking properties to sustainability, wool is a versatile and practical choice for warm-weather wear. So, next time you're updating your summer wardrobe, consider giving wool a try—you might be pleasantly surprised at how cool and comfortable you can be.
